Finland houses a lively community of printmakers, especially the group working with woodcut is strongly represented. Associations as the ‘Finnish Woodcut Artist Society’ and the ‘Association of Finnish Printmakers’, offer the possibility to see each other’s work and show it to a larger public (outside Finland).
One of these printmakers is Jussi Juurinen (1976).
Talking about Juurinen’s art is talking about ‘the past’. A past touched through familiar things. Grandfathers' old shirt, grandma's house, the landscapes of his daily itinerary, the games he played as a boy, …, are just a few examples that trigger the working process.
Woodcut is, as with many printmaking techniques, a slow technique. It takes time to carve in the wood and print the result, color woodcut consumes even more time. The time to get from the initial idea to the finished print is essential in his work. In Jussi’s own words: ‘The slow process helps me get acquainted with my ideas and creates an analogy between my works and their subject. Through the slow process my works get a chance to grow in their own time, thus gaining a life of their own as the process goes on, and starting to refer to things outside their point of origin.’
There is the presence of silent poetry in the work, in some of them even a nostalgic feeling. Colors, form, content and presentation are well thought. Craftsmanship is very important, everything has to be in balance.
Looking at the work on Jussi Juurinen you easily forget these are woodcuts. And that’s in a way a very good sing. It shows the ability of work to communicate through content and let us forget about the technique it is made with.

Finland… Je zou het niet vermoeden, maar het land huist een levendige scène van kunstenaars die grafiek maken. Vooral de groep die werkt met houtsnede is sterk vertegenwoordigd. Verenigingen als de ‘Finnish Woodcut Artist Society’ and the ‘Association of Finnish Printmakers’, geven hun leden de kans om elkaars werk te zien maar het ook te tonen aan een breder publiek.
Een van deze kunstenaars is Jussi Juurinen (1976).
Centraal thema in het werk van Juurinen is het ‘verleden”. Een hemd van zijn grootvader, grootmoeders huis uit de jeugdherinneringen, landschappen die hij dagelijks ziet, de spelletjes die hij als kind speelde, … Dit alles kan een aanzetten tot beeldend werk.
Houtsnede is, als met zoveel andere grafische technieken, een trage techniek. Het neemt tijd om in het hout te snijden en te drukken, kleurenhoutsnede des te meer.
In Juurinen’s werk is tijd nu net essentieel, de tijd van het vertrek- tot eindpunt.
Jussi Juurinen: “Het trage proces helpt om het initieel idee vorm te geven en creëert een analogie tussen het werk en onderwerp. Door het trage proces krijgen de werken de kans om te groeien binnen de tijd die daarvoor nodig is. Op die manier krijgen ze een eigen leven en komen er vanzelf verwijzingen naar dingen buiten het oorspronkelijke vertrekpunt”.
In het werk is een stille poëzie aanwezig, en in sommige werken zelfs een nostalgisch gevoel. Kleur, vorm, inhoud en presentatie zijn wel doordacht. Het grafisch kunnen is sterk aanwezig en alles is in balans.
Bij het werk van Jussi Juurinen vergeet je vlug dat dit houtsneden zijn. Dat is een goed teken. Hier schuilt het vermogen om inhoud te tonen zonder te refereren naar de techniek. En dat is sterk!
